About the Contest
This regional contest is part of a national initiative called Young Playwrights for Change, sponsored by the American Alliance of Theatre & Education (AATE) and Theatre For Young Audiences/USA, two organizations dedicated to engaging young people in theatre arts.
Atlas Performing Arts Center, The Kennedy Center, and Young Playwrights' Theater have come together to host this 2014 regional competition for middle schoolers (grades 6-8) in the greater DC area. Students are able to submit a 10-minute play, exploring the subject of FAMILY, which will be read by theatre professionals.

We see all kinds of family structures all around us. Families blend races, cultures, sexual orientations, and generations. People come to families through adoption, birth, marriage, and in many other ways.

The Prizes
All playwrights who submit a play will receive a two-for-one ticket voucher to any performance at the Atlas INTERSECTIONS Festival in Feb-March! (tickets subject to availability)
More information about the festival is available on their website: http://intersectionsdc.org/ Five regional winners will receive an all-access “artist pass”and a reading of their play at the Atlas INTERSECTIONS Festival, as well as professional feedback on their work! One Grand Prize Winner will have their work submitted to the National Competition. The winner of the National Competition will have the opportunity to travel to Chicago with a parent or guardian to see their play read at the One Theatre World Conference in May. |
The Rules
1. Only
students in 6-8th grade may enter.
2. The play must be a completely original work (not adapted from a book, movie, or other story).
3. Completed scripts must be less than 10 minutes when read aloud.
4. Scripts may include up to six characters.
5. Students must have a parent or guardian's permission to enter the contest.
6. Scripts must be in standard American format, listed in the Creative and Style Guidelines section of the website.
7. AATE and TYA/USA reserve the right to change any contest rules.
8. AATE and TYA/USA reserve the right to request changes to submitted scripts, post the names of the chosen playwrights on marketing/press materials, use photos and/or recordings of scripts, or make the script available online for free.
